India has a long tradition of higher education dating back thousands of years. Since the 1970s, however, funding to universities and colleges has been much less than optimal and consequently, the quality of science education has deteriorated. Recently, the government has initiated steps to rectify this and it is now funding universities and colleges to strengthen their life sciences departments providing hope for future biology education in India.
