(生物谷Bioon.com)

Three universities which research brain tumours have been named as centres of excellence.

The Queen Mary University of London, the University of Portsmouth and Plymouth University will be part of a national network of scientists.

The aim is to revolutionise research into the tumours, which kill more people under 40 than any other cancer, a spokesman said.

The announcement means the centres will also each receive ?1m a year.

The universities were chosen by the charity Brain Tumour Research.

Sue Farrington Smith from the charity said they would form "a new and powerful network, collaborating with each other and other institutes, within the UK and internationally".

Professor Oliver Hannemann, the leader of the Plymouth researchers, said the centre would be "for research but also to raise awareness".

Ben Mee, from Dartmoor Zoo, who was made famous by the film We Bought a Zoo, lost his wife Katherine to a brain tumour in 2006.

He said: "I was more than frustrated at the time when we were exposed to the relentlessness of this disease.

"The idea it could possibly be solved here, locally, would be amazing."

In 2012, researchers at Plymouth University were given ?400,000 to investigate ways of treating brain tumours by Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council.
